What is dead stock management?

Dead stock management means finding items not issued in months, valuing them, and acting: use them instead of new purchases, return or sell them, and fix reorder levels so they stop piling up.

Money you cannot see

Walk through the back of any factory store and you will find it: spares for a machine replaced years ago, consumables bought in bulk for a discount, material ordered twice because nobody checked the shelf.

The register counts it as stock, but it is cash tied up on a shelf, and it often gets bought again because nobody knows it is there.

Why dead stock builds up

No one sees it. In a register, a line idle for a year looks like one that moved yesterday.

Buying without checking. Indents raised without live stock reorder what is already on the shelf.

Buying in round numbers. Ordering 100 for a discount fills the store with months of a rarely used item.

Production changes. A machine is replaced, and its spares stay behind.

Spread across units. One plant's surplus is another plant's purchase.

How IndustryPrime brings it into view

Every movement on record

Every goods receipt, material issue, transfer and adjustment runs through IndustryPrime, so it knows when each item last moved. The store ledger keeps itself.

Dead and slow-moving stock reports

Items that have not moved, or move rarely, with quantity and value, by division or for the whole group. Read what counts as dead stock.

Check the shelf before you buy

When an indent is raised, the team sees stock across units. Stock transfer lets one plant use another's surplus within the same company instead of placing a new order.

Clean exits, and no next pile

Scrap management records what leaves, so stock values stay right. Set minimum and maximum levels and use suggested order quantities, so you buy what you will use.

Where to start

The first report is only as good as the stock you load. Most plants do a physical count at go-live and load it from Excel. From then on, the report builds itself.

Dead stock is often the other side of material consumption.

How it works

Clear dead stock, step by step

  1. 1

    Every movement is recorded

Receipts, issues, transfers and adjustments are captured, so each item's last movement is known.

  2. 2

See dead and slow movers with their value

Reports list items that have not moved, with quantity and value, by division.

  3. 3

Stop buying what you already have

Live stock shows when an indent is raised, so purchase checks the shelf first.

  4. 4

    Decide and act

Use surplus instead of buying, transfer it to another unit of the same company, or scrap it.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

When does an item count as dead stock?

Each business sets its own rule, but a common one is no issue for 12 months. Slow-moving stock is typically items used only a few times in the same period.

Is the dead stock report extra?

No, it's included. Dead stock and slow-moving stock reports come in the one plan, with every other feature.

Can I see dead stock for each plant or division separately?

Yes. Reports can be viewed division by division, and across all units together, so you can move surplus from one plant to another of the same company.

How do I get rid of dead stock once I find it?

Check whether it can replace an upcoming purchase, transfer it to another unit of the same company, return it to the vendor where possible, or sell it as surplus or scrap. Scrap management is built in.

How do I stop dead stock building up again?

Review min and max levels for the items that turned dead, and use suggested order quantities instead of round-number orders. The monthly report shows whether it is working.
